Curious About our Hydrant-Based Flushing System?

To help ensure high quality, palatable drinking water, it’s necessary to keep treated water moving throughout the distribution system. Typically, our gravity system, water pumps and regular hydrant flushing program do this job well. In some areas, a little more help is needed to keep the water moving.

That’s why Utilities Kingston employs four temporary flushing systems that can be used wherever a hydrant is available. Crews decide to install these devices based on their knowledge of the water distribution system, in areas identified through our water quality sampling program, or where we receive a high rate of calls from customers about discoloured water or other issue with water esthetics. The devices help us deliver efficient utility services by freeing up our crews for other operation and maintenance activities.

Currently, the four devices are installed on Sunnyside Road, Aley Street, Mill Pond Place and Front Road. It’s important to note that if you see one of the devices in your area, the water is still safe and meets water quality standards.

The devices can be programmed to flush a water line up to nine times per day, seven days a week, with flush durations ranging from one minute to four hours. Before crews install them, they verify the drainage path, for example to help ensure the safety of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and to minimize erosion. We also monitor the devices regularly.

The water that is flushed from the system is directed to the storm sewer and then ultimately Lake Ontario. To protect this important drinking water source, the system includes a dechlorinating tablet chamber so the water gets dechlorinated before being discharged.

Some pooling of water in the immediate area is normal and not a cause for concern. Water services in the area should not be impacted. However, if you have concerns about any of our utility services, please let us know by calling our 24 hour line at 613-546-1181.
