Q: Are there any charges or deposits required in order to install gas service?

A: No deposit is required for the proposed installation when the customer signs a gas application, however, Utilities Kingston reserves the right to charge up to $500.00 if no appliance is connected within 6 months, if the application has been signed between May 1st and November 15th. Utilities Kingston reserves the right to charge up to $1000.00 if no appliance is connected within 1 month, if the application has been signed between November 16th and April 30th. Note: A billing deposit may be required, contact the customer service centre at 546-0000.

Q: Are there any charges that apply once the gas meter has been installed by Utilities Kingston?

A: An account set-up charge and a monthly service charge will be applied from the date the gas service is installed.

Q: Where is the gas meter located?

A: The meter can be located on the front (street side) of the house or within 3 metres of the front corner of the house. If the location is further back than 3 metres, a charge of $25.00 per additional metre shall be required before the application is processed. There are restrictions set out by the Canadian Gas Association regarding the location of meters and regulators that must be met.

Q: Do I have to come into Utilities Kingston to complete the Application for Gas Connection?

A: It is not necessary to come into the Utilities Kingston office to complete an application form, in fact, it is better to arrange to meet a Utilities Kingston representative at the property to determine the best location for the gas service (meter). Call 546-1181 ext.2285

Q: Does it cost the customer anything to have the gas service put in by Utilities Kingston?

A: No. Utilities Kingston installs the service to the customers house (from the gas main to the meter) at no charge with the exception of issues addressed in question 1.

Q: How long will it take to have the gas service installed?

A: Typically, the gas service will be installed 4-6 weeks from the completion of the gas application. The length of time may vary due to fluctuations in demand for new services and seasonal weather conditions.

Q: Why does it take four to six weeks before gas service is installed?

A: Utilities Kingston staff must arrange for site clearances from their own and other utilities locate staff (Bell, Cable, City of Kingston). When clearances are complete, a layout and material list can be finalized. This information is then forwarded to either Utilities Kingston crews or to an outside Contractor.

Q: If a customer has a gas service, with an existing gas appliance connected (furnace, stove, hotwater tank), do they need to contact Utilities Kingston in order to install a new gas appliance?

A: No. When one already has a gas service, simply contact a local heating contractor and they can install any gas appliance that one needs. Remember Utilities Kingston recommends you get at least two or three quotes.
