CITY UPDATES EMERGENCY SITUATION (Aug 15, 2:30 p.m.)

BLACKOUT HELP

EMERGENCY TIPS

Here are some emergency power-out tips from your health unit, city police, and fire & rescue services.

The City remains in a State of Emergency.

While most of the power in the City remains on, the system is not stable. Rolling blackouts have already begun in parts of the City and are expected to continue over the next 72 hours.

Electricity will be off in some areas while it is being restored in other areas. This is an inconvenience, but it is necessary. There will be no notice. Do not use elevators. Be prepared - do not panic.

Do not use air conditioner, the system is too fragile.

The Leo LaFleur Pool at the Memorial Centre, 303 York Street, will be open for general swims as follows:

  • Friday, August 15 at 3:00 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 16 at 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, August 17 at 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Also, there have been no beach closures. Swimming should be limited to marked public beach areas.

The municipal administrative offices remain closed. Facilities at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour are available as this time. City events and programs including tonight’s Grand Theatre production have been cancelled. Issues arising as a result of these cancellations will be dealt with and communicated after the State of Emergency has been lifted in the City.

The Boil Water Advisory is still in place for homes north of Taylor Kidd Boulevard in the City's west end. This is a precautionary measure only. We have no reports of contamination. Be sure to boil the water for at least sixty seconds. Start timing when the water begins to boil.

There is still a total ban on lawn watering, washing your car. The water use restrictions are still in effect and residents are asked to conserve where possible.

If you need clarification on any information, please call the Citizen Inquiry Centre at 384-1954.
