N.Y. LIQUID MANURE SPILL UNLIKELY TO THREATEN KINGSTON WATER
The 11 million litres of liquid manure that spilled into the Black River in Northern New York State yesterday is quite serious and a disaster for certain fish
species, but poses no risks to Kingston's drinking water.
"We are monitoring the situation, and at this time there is no cause for alarm", said Jim Keech, President of Utilities Kingston.
"We are confident with the multi-barrier system we have in place that protects our drinking water," he added.
A series of filtration, treatment, disinfection, monitoring and backup systems are in place to continually supply high-quality drinking water to homes and
business.
Approximately 100,000 people are supplied with water from the Kingston Central Water Treatment Plant and Kingston West Water Treatment Plant. There are
approximately 500 km of water mains, and over 1200 fire hydrants in the system. Daily flows are approximately 100,000 cubic metres a day.
