UTILITIES KINGSTON TO FLUSH HYDRANTS AS PART OF REGULAR INSURANCE CHECK

TEMPORARY DISCOLOURATION OF WATER POSES NO HEALTH RISKS

PUBLIC NOTICE

Read a Public Notice about the Fire Hydrant Flushing.

Some households may notice red water coming out of their taps this week as Utilities Kingston and the fire underwriters (who insure the City's water system) conduct regular random spot checks on Aug. 15, 16, 22 and 23. Flushing the hydrants at maximum flow can stir up iron deposits in the water making water appear red, but residents should be assured it remains safe to use.

"The discolouration is temporary and poses no health risk. Simply run your cold water until it clears," says Kevin Riley, Manager of Underground Infrastructure. "You are only likely to notice discolouration if flushing is taking place in your area."

Generally, when Utilities Kingston conducts water main cleaning/hydrant flushing, it would deliver a notice to affected homes before flushing begins. However, in this case, the location of the fire hydrants will be chosen at random by the underwriter and advance notice will not be possible.

"Utilities Kingston regularly flushes fire hydrants to verify the hydrants have adequate flow for fire protection, to clean out the water mains and to continue to provide high quality drinking water," says Riley.

He suggests residents check that their water is clear this week before doing laundry or other projects that may be affected by discoloured water. Customers should make sure the cold water is running clear. Residents may also prefer to keep a pitcher of clear water in the refrigerator for drinking.

"Some residents may notice a small drop in water pressure, but there will be no disruption in service," adds Riley.
