Refrigerators that are more than 10-years-old use up to 75 per cent more electricity than new refrigerators: that's why Kingston Electricity Distribution Limited (KEDL) and the Ontario Power Authority are offering to pick up and safely dispose of Kingstonians' old fridges for free. Last year's pilot of The Great Refrigerator Roundup program exceeded its target by 50 per cent, but there are still more old refrigerators that need to be taken off Kingston's electrical grid. KEDL is again participating in the program to help Kingstonians save energy, the environment and money - an old extra fridge can cost a resident up to $150 years to operate. "We are excited to be a part of The Great Refrigerator Roundup." said Jim Keech President of Kingston Electricity Distribution Limited. "By taking advantage of The Great Refrigerator Roundup ProgramOM, the people of Kingston can play an important role in using electricity wisely and reducing electrical demand." Refrigerators collected through the program will be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner, resulting in a significantly reduced contribution to local landfill. Fridges that are 10-years-old and in working condition will be picked up for free by calling 1-877-797-9473 or visit: www.everykilowattcounts.com/roundup. "This and other programs offered this summer represent the largest coordinated effort Ontario has ever made to encourage consumers to use less electricity," said Paul Shervill, a Vice President of the Ontario Power Authority. "As Ontario moves toward re-building its electricity infrastructure, the conservation initiatives of each resident maintain and enhance the sustainability of our current power generation and distribution system." Last year, Ontarians wholeheartedly embraced conservation incentives - over 2.8 million CFL light bulbs were purchased by Ontario households through Ontario Power Authority programs. "Everyone in Ontario needs to be concerned about electricity conservation," said Peter Love, Ontario's Chief Energy Conservation Officer. "I am pleased to see the continued expansion of programs that encourage Ontarians to take immediate action and reward them for doing so."
