CLEANING AND REPAIR OF DOWNTOWN SEWER PIPES WILL CONTINUE TO JULY
Starting April 8, work begins on a project to clean and repair a major sewer line running through Kingston's downtown core. The work is expected to last until
July and sewer pipe cleaning is scheduled for the following streets (all dates are approximate):
-
Emily Street from April 8 to April 18
-
Maitland Street from April 16 to April 25
-
West Street from April 21 to May 2
-
Ontario Street from West Street to Place D'Armes from April 28 to May 23
-
Place D'Armes from Ontario Street to Wellington Street from May 19 to June 13
-
Wellington Street, from Place D'Armes to Bay Street from May 19 to June 13
Traffic will continue to flow on these streets while the work is completed, but traffic will be delayed as drivers are directed around the special equipment
being brought in to flush and vacuum the pipes of the 50 year-old Harbourfront Trunk Sewer line. The equipment will be placed on the street by sewer access
covers.
Two to three weeks after the pipes are cleaned, trucks will be parked by the sewer access covers while repairs are made to the pipes. This will involve the
diversion of sewage through temporary black plastic pipes placed on the surface of the road around work areas.
This work will restore the capacity of these pipes and is part of Utilities Kingston's ongoing infrastructure improvement efforts aimed at further preventing
Combined Sewer Overflows. The Harbourfront Trunk Sewer was originally constructed in the early 1950s to carry the majority of the sewerage (both storm and
sanitary) away from the downtown core to the Ravensview Sewage Treatment Plant.
In recent years, Utilities Kingston has completed considerable work along this sewer, including the construction of two major Combined Sewer Overflow Tanks, at
Collingwood Street and Emma Martin Park, and the twinning of the sewer from Princess Street to the River Street Sewage Pumping Station.
